Who We Are

Mission

The Library Patrons Union is an explicitly leftist, community-run union of Hennepin County Library patrons, organizing for more just public libraries.

Vision

Based on our love and hope for the liberatory potential of public libraries, we envision a library system led collaboratively by the communities it serves, rooted in racial and social justice.

Values

  • Libraries are necessary to a healthy society and must be expanded and improved alongside other public spaces and services.
  • People of all ages and experiences hold valuable wisdom. Intergenerational, accessible organizing is vital to our success.
  • Organizing is relational and to sustain this work we aim to move at the speed of trust.
  • Membership will look different for each person. In celebration of that we uplift and create intentional and varied opportunities for engagement.
  • We support local communities in taking action.
  • As abolitionists we don’t use punishment or exile as organizing strategies.
  • Practicing what we preach, we are curious about what we don’t know and able to engage in accountability.

Why organize around libraries?
